What is Roux-Y gastric bypass?
The stomach is cut from the bottom of the esophagus, leaving 20-30cc of the stomach. Thus the stomach is divided into two parts, the small part of which takes the food and the large part remains unused.
In the nexat phase of the surgery, the small intestine is cut just below the duodenum. This creates a connection by pulling one end of the cut intestine towards the small stomach. The other end of the cut intestine is placed next to the small intestine and a second connection is made to give the intestine a Y-shape. Hence the operation is called Roux-Y gastric bypass.
How can you lose weight with gastric bypass surgery?
A bypass surgery involves making the stomach smaller and skipping part of the small intestine and connecting it to the stomach. This leads to an earlier feeling of satiety from eating less, as well as a bypass around the duodenum. This will reduce the intake of food and calories and this will lead to significant weight loss.
Gastric bypass is the most complex form of gastric surgery.
The Roux-Y gastric bypass has been a popular weight loss surgery in the past. Today it is being replaced by other, less invasive operations.
How is gastric bypass surgery performed?
The operation is performed under general anesthesia using a laparoscopic (closed) technique. With the help of laparoscopic instruments, a two-centimeter incision is made in the abdomen, placing a camera and instruments. The stomach is separated by sewing and cutting at the same time with the help of tools called staplers and steel staples.
The Roux-Y gastric bypass surgery is ideal in those cases:
Patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 and higher,
BMI between 35 and 39.9 is a serious health problem (type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, severe sleep apnea, etc.).
If your obesity has emerged from excessive alcohol consumption or sugary foods, we may recommend gastric bypass surgery.
How long does the operation take?
Dr. Aynacı does not prefer to operate on the day the patient arrives. The operation is performed the following day. After the patient is taken to the operating room, it takes 30 minutes to fall asleep under general anesthesia for the surgical materials and positioning to be prepared. Dr. Aynacı can only start the operation after 30 minutes. The operation itself takes an average of 60-75 minutes. The patient takes about 15 minutes to wake up. The total duration of the operation is 3 hours. When the operation is over, the patient wakes up in a single room, where professional staff will take care of them in the best possible way.
What are the risks of the surgery?
There are generally always risks involved in surgical interventions. However, obesity surgery itself is not particularly dangerous. Information about the techniques used, the materials used, and the general health of the patient will reduce the risk of surgery. Dr. Aynacı uses all tools and materials only once. The material used is from Medtronic (Covidien) and is made in America.
In rare cases, intestinal blockages due to damage to important organs or vessels, bleeding, infections from internal or external wounds, peritonitis, leakage from anastomoses, stenoses, wound healing problems, dumping syndrome, thrombosis and embolism, gastrointestinal disorders, allergies and internal hernias come.
What are the disadvantages of gastric bypass?
First and foremost, gastric bypass is not a reversible procedure should you later regret the operation. In other words, you should be aware that it is a permanent operation. Because of this, it is necessary to think carefully before surgery.
It is important to note that gastric bypass surgery gives the stomach and intestines little time and space to absorb fat and nutrients. You should take vitamin and mineral supplements daily for the rest of your life as fewer vitamins and minerals can be absorbed.
However, you will definitely lose weight after the operation and have a much better quality of life if you were able to do your activities with difficulty before the operation.
Does gastric bypass surgery have any side effects?
In the first six months after the operation, it is important to be careful about food intake and not to drink alcohol, as the patient may experience slight abdominal pressure, which can lead to mild discomfort.
You may also suffer from gas or diarrhea. In rare cases, reactive hypoglycemia can occur after eating or drinking too much sugar.
Multivitamin
Polyvit syrup should be taken twice a day, morning and evening. After 1 month, multivitamin tablets can be taken once a day.
Flight
If all goes well, you will be discharged on day 3 and can fly home the same day.
Control Period
After your return, you must have blood tests carried out in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, 12th and 24th months. You can send it to us on WhatsApp or email so your doctor can review it. We will let you know if any medicines need to be added to your blood tests according to the treatment.
